For my YA novel, which is heavily autobiographical, I had a few people read it in manuscript to make sure they were okay with it. They all were fine, though one friend said that he hadn't punched me in the face during a fight (I later remembered that it was indeed a different kid who'd punched me). But my incorrect memory of the real event gave me the most effective fictional version.
