In a different lifetime I knew Hoffman briefly. I worked with his future partner in theater on an off Broadway production together as a sound designer. He came around because he was "courting her." This was right before he made it really big. He'd come in with his bike and sit in the sides watching rehearsals. This is when we'd have our brief conversations. I think about him from time to time. I thought his partner was his thread, but that could fray over time too. Yes, the loneliness he must have felt on his last day alive. I imagine it was very similar to my brother's last day too.
I seem to recall that someone surreptitiously recorded Hoffman during a 12-step meeting. That would certainly fray the thread.
